A Working Christmas

An early start to the day, woke up early, not enough time before my alarm to make it worthwhile to attempt going back to sleep so I began my day, "Merry Christmas to all!" Once ready, I drove in to site, needed to bring some last minute items out for our Company sponsored Christmas meal. OK, the Company pays, but the work is organized in small teams and the Team Leads, me for instance has to do all the background preparation to provide a meal for all our folk, both day and night shifts and manage the budget for it etc. Not too great a challenge, while on my last series of days on-site, I gathered with some of the team who will be sharing the meal and we developed a menu, then while at home, LOML ([info]aetheldaeg) and I went shopping. Two sizes of paper plates, plastic cutlery, aluminum foil, and the food list too. At the check out I had to confirm that they would accept my company credit card, whew, and the total was well within the amount budgeted.

Back at work yesterday, I discovered that we'd be a few more than anticipated, therefore, back to the store for more. I even added two traditional fruit cakes, not much hope that many will partake, but, it's a Christmas tradition.

The weather outside is not frightful, it's even quite delightful, cold at -22 Celsius but clear and bright. Once daylight arrives it's supposed to warm to a balmy -15, yeah!

We will commence food prep at about 10:30 so that we can eat between 11:30 and 13:00. Night shift will decide when they want to consume their meal and back up the timings accordingly. BBQ T-bone steak, sauteed onions and mushrooms, baked potato with bacon bit and sour cream, cole slaw, Ceasar salad and for dessert, two varieties of cheese cake and of course the fruit cake.

I expect that there won't be much outside the scope of routine operations today, but, I should be going for now.

My best wishes to all that you may celebrate the birth of our Lord Jesus with family and friends, enjoying the spirit and shared good times.

Spare me your contract

I enjoy stalking White Mushrooms around all day and playing charades. I especially enjoy when they get frustrated, stomp their little feet, and disappear without giving me swag. Fuckers.

Edit: And I've been conned. CONNED I SAY. Say you work sixty to seventy-two hours a week; say you're out by six in the morning, home around eight or nine, and are generally working weekends or else sleeping. Where do you watch television in all this? Easy answer is that you don't. So riddle me this: why would I need (or pay) for three tiers? OH YES. Because someone who spends forty hours a week working, and the rest of their time running around the god forsaken city or tinkering with the remainder of their time feels that it's necessary for the good hour or so of DISCOVERY CHANNEL they watch a week. Sweet GOD IT'S CALLED A TORRENT.

I'm going to weep when I get next months bills. I'm not called Scrooge solely for my hatred of Christmas; no, I earned that name by being ridiculously frugal in my spending. You know why? BECAUSE I'M A JEW AND AN ACCOUNTANT: IT'S MY JOB TO BE STINGY.

Tiger

It's been some time since I last posted so...

In January 1998, yes, over a decade ago, I was deployed to Quebec during what had been called the "Ice Storm" which ravaged the electrical grid of that province. We were there for about a month, my memory can't recall the exact time. About the third week, I was able to call home to catch up with LOML [info]aetheldaeg and our two girls. Our youngest told me when it was her turn to talk that earlier they were in the mall, stopped at a pet store and bought me a "Son" who they named Tiger. Most important, as our youngest said, "He has grey and white fur, just like you!" Needless to say, I was not overjoyed to discover that we had added to our cat family, as Tiger made four. But, that was before I came home. After out first meeting, during which Tiger sure footedly climbed up my shift front to curl up in the hollow of me neck, we became inseparable. He had so completely become my son that we even named him "AMOTH" which stands for Acting Man Of The House, for whenever I was away, Tiger was the man. He has a loud purr, is very gentle and enjoys sleeping on our bed, just to keep the duvet from flying off.

Well, Tiger is no longer a kitten, he weighs in at close to 15 lbs, but, he still climbs up to curl in the hollow of my neck, OK, mostly he curls up and I hold him close to my neck, I'm not that strong! Anyway, I thought that perhaps it was time to share a bit about what my son is like and why we spend large amounts of time together whenever possible.
